Map before opening
Locate the main shutoff, the water heater, any visible pipe runs, fixture clusters, and cleanouts, and trace the path from the symptom back to the stack.
Respect the building
From Center Square brownstones and Arbor Hill rowhouses to bungalows around Pine Hills and newer homes west of downtown, Albany plumbing is rarely one-size-fits-all. Any work that opens plaster, brick, or trim in one of these houses needs an access plan and a restoration plan before the first cut.
Prepare for winter
Walk the exterior for hose bibs, note which pipes run through unheated crawlspaces or attics, and address those before the Capital Region’s first hard freeze.
Compare scopes, not totals
Line up what each quote actually includes — protection, access, disposal, permits, material grade, testing, patch-up, and warranty — before comparing the bottom line.
